Making a ‘Stand Out’ Print Design

As I walked along my high street yesterday I was distracted by a set of posters that had been created for a new shop opening in town. The designers had cleverly gone for bright colours and large images on specially sized posters created to fit the window exactly.

I couldn’t help but think what a clever idea this is, especially as the store is focussed on female consumers and therefore the design was mainly pinks and bright colours.

Creating a design like this for large promotional products is not as diffiult as many people think and software available online can be used to create trendy, inventive and suitable promotional images for this purpose.

One of the principal things to consider when using photos in your design is the resolution and quality of the photo overall. An image that is low resolution and highly pixellated is unlikely to transfer to these products easily.

I also believe that choosing pictures with stand out colours and text that is clear and concise is important. The messages portrayed in the text should be ‘to the point’ whilst still providing the information needed.

However most important is the ‘call to action’. What does your information tell the reader to do. Why should they call again / telephone you / visit the store? Some businesses use leaflets to promote special offers or give details of upcoming promotional dates, both of which fall into the ‘call to action’ category. However adding something as simple as a telephone number can also do the job, but make sure any contact details you give are correct.

Some marketing experts say that a picture can say a thousand words, with some buyers looking at the image in front of them and making a decision before they have even read the content of the text. To me, this proves that taking time to select and edit the right pictures for your promotional materials is crucial.

Promotional products without the carbon footprint

There has never been a more useful time for businesses to look at ways of reducing their carbon footprint, with various incentives and schemes available around the country to make it more appealing.

As a result it is also a consideration for many companies who are looking at producing new marketing materials to promote services and products for the coming exhibition season. There are a variety of ways to make your marketing campaigns greener and more environmentally friendly by using some of the promotional products and eco methods available. These include:

Eco Bags

Printed bags are a popular choice for any marketing campaign as well as being used in shops and exhibitions. A variety of styles are available that differ from the traditional plastic carriers available.

Cotton bags are popular (sometimes known as Jute bags) and some manufacturers also supply bags made of recycled materials as well. Paper bags are also an option as they are recyclable.

Recycled Promotional Products

Recyclable Promotional Pen

Items such as pens, mugs and other materials are sometimes created with recycled materials and are often around the same price as similar products without the eco friendlyness!

The pen pictured is a fully recyclable biro, made of corn starch so the product will biodegrade.

Recycled Printed Stationary

When printing items such as business cards, letterheads or envelopes there are quality cards and paper to use that are made of recycled products.

Many businesses also use recycled paper to print other promotional materials such as brochures and leaflets.

So whatever your marketing project is, there are many ways you can incorporate an eco friendly message without breaking the bank!

Are promotional purchases being influenced by gadgets?

I noticed an American report recently that talked about the popularity of products that are closely related to todays popular gadgets and must-have gift ideas.

It’s certainly a sign of the times when you consider that many of these products are available for personalisation just like a printed pen or promotional bag (see previous posts for more information on these).

For example, the much sought after iPad is a popular choice with many businesses and you will often see workers using them to keep in touch at an exhibition, conference or meeting. As a result, some of the fastest growing promotional products are iPad and Netbook accessories such as cases and covers. The same applies to smart phones and MP3 players, all of which have promotional extras that can be created.

Stress is a big part of running a business (especially these days and with the current economic climent) so you can see why personalised stress balls and other stress relief tools are also popular.

The last few years has seen a boom in sales of speciality tea and coffee in take away form, with the UK high streets filled with cafes and bistros that regularly tempt workers. Personalised take away latte mugs and flasks are also a popular choice, with branding added to the exterior of the flask.

Card Style Personalised USB Drive

Going back to technology – USB keys and other memory stick styles are also popular and come in a variety of forms. Credit card style keys are popular as they can be easily transported and offer a large print space. Besides this, some manufacturers offer a bespoke moulding service so the plastic case is bespoke built for your needs. These are likely to become more popular as giveaways and for employees as they are personalised and functional.

New Year Promotional Ideas

Are you looking for inspiration for your business marketing in 2012? Bored of using the same design and print methods in your marketing products or just looking for ways to save some money in these areas?

With the festive season nearly upon us, it seems that most businesses are starting to wind down and as a result many of us have spare time to complete new projects in preparation for the New Year. With this in mind, I have written my list of design ideas and tips that anyone can try in order to try and save time and design costs on your promotional products next year

Get some desktop design software

One of the first things you can do to help save time (and even costs) for design work is purchase your own in house desktop design software. Using this you will be able to create save and electronically send your own design ideas to your printer.

Purchase a good quality colour printer

If you don’t want to pay for printing of leaflets and brochures then why not do your own? If smaller quantities are only needed on an ad-hoc basis then a good quality colour printer might be most cost effective. One word of warning though, edge to edge printing on a desktop printer is hard to come by, so any designs that have a colour background may print with a border, which will need to be removed!

Start getting electronic copies of everything from your printer

The list of things you can receive electronically is endless, but some of the most useful items you can ask for include your company logo, a copy of your letterhead, a copy of your favicon (used for your website) and any graphics that might have been created for use online.

Try to get high quality JPEGs and because of the size you might want to ask for a disk to be sent rather than an email.

Create your own promotional product designs

Once you have the hang of your design software you can use the electronic copies of your logo to create your own design ideas for promotional products (there are a few tips on one of my posts below on this).

Learning how to use the basics of design software can be fairly straightforward and I would recommend familiarising yourself with online communities for the software manufacturers as you will often find helpful advice and tips on what to do.

Design your own carrier bag

You don;t just have to be a high street store to need promotional bags such as printed carrier bags or branded shopping bags.

Many mail order businesses also use promotional bags as well as companies that use them for the exhibition season for handing out literature such as brochures and promotional products.

Despite the recent news that it is likely a levy will be placed on the use of carrier bags (a regulation that is already in force in Wales), there are still many businesses that need to use them. As a result companies are looking for alternative bags that might be re-usable of eco-friendly, so if customers have to pay for the bag they are getting something of higher quality.

Woven Laminate Promotional Bags

These colourful bags often have a large print area (as you can see from the picture, this is sometimes the full surface of the bag). Their woven material and webbed handles makes them hard wearing and re-usable as well as being a stylish shopping bag.

A choice of gloss of matt finishes is available and the bags can be purchased in quantities as small as 1000, so if you only have a handful of events to attend you don’t need to print too many of them.

Jute Promotional Bags

Jute Promotional Bag

Jute bags are very trendy at the moment, with many stores selling them as bags with a printed message, not just for taking other products away with you.

Their canvas finish also makes them hard wearing and printing is normally completed on the face of the bag.

You can purchase these in amounts as small as 250 and finishes to consider include the style of printing, handle length and make-up.

Promotional Paper Bags

Laminate Rope Handled Bag

Although they are not the traditional “paper bags” we all imagine, some bags made of stronger card and paper are popular both in boutique styles stores and at exhibitions and events. Being more spacious than other bags makes them a good choice for larger items and the large print area leaves plenty of space for your branding or message.

They tend to come with rope handles, so they are also hard wearing, but possibly not as much as the other styles mentioned above.

It’s fair to say there are plenty of options for alternative carrier bags besides the traditional carrier many people want to get away from. The materials used in the products above also makes them more eco friendly that a plastic carrier – another consideration for any business reviewing its carbon footprint.

Design advice for Promotional Products

As I mentioned in my last post, it’s getting to that time of year again when those of us purchasing marketing materials need to be thinking about what we will be handing out at Christmas and the new year.

But whether it is promotional pens, printed mugs a personalised novelty gift or an executive item, there is one part of the process everyone seems to hate enduring – design.

Unfortunately, if you have not worked with photo editing or image creating software then making your desired artwork can be a bit of a task, but with a few helpful hints you might find it far easier to do. Besides, the cost savings in creating your own artwork can often make it worthwhile, especially if you print several promotional items on a regular basis.

Here are a few things to consider before getting underway with your own design project:

Choose promotional products that will work well with your design

Designed and Personalised Pen

Designed and Personalised Pen

Starting from the ground up, if you have a logo that is navy blue, then choosing a promotional product that is black just won’t work. Dark on light and light on dark is often a good rule of thumb, but there are still colours that clash, so look out for those.

Ask your supplier what format they want the design in and what size

Commonly the file extensions required are .jpg, .gif and .eps (encapsulated postscript). Most of the primary graphic design software will allow you to create these files – in the past I have seen businesses that regularly use Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro for these purposes.

Image size is crucial – the smaller the image the less detail you can have – this is a problem that is especially prevalent in promotional pens, which often have a tight print space. Most graphic design software asks you to stipulate the image size before commencing, so you know you have the right dimensions in place before you start.

Use existing images and don’t distort them!

Your company logo should be supplied by your designer in a high quality and usable format. This means that when you shrink the image it will not become distorted. Use tools such a the “lock aspect ratio” so your images keep their relative width and height as you reduce the size.

Also ask your logo designer to supply the pantone and/or rgb references for the colours used in the final image. This way you can match them up with your final promotional design.

Ask for a sample from the promotional product manufacturer

Once you have finalised and sent the design to you should request a sample from the manufacturer – not all companies offer this service, but many will re-proof your artwork to confirm you are happy with the design and to go ahead.

Above all things, check, check and double-check any contact details and make sure you pay lots of attention to the proof, because re-printing products is a waste of time and money.

Are Conference Folders on your print list for 2012?

I enjoy this time of year – getting ready for the marketing effort for 2012 by designing and printing new uniforms and promotional items and as always I am looking for new ideas for our corporate gifts. This year might be a good opportunity to look at some Branded Conference Folders.

PVC Conference Folder

PVC Conference Folder

I have seen them many times before at events but had always considered them to be more of a luxury giveaway, so with a budget for new uniforms available I have been thinking that a smart looking folder might really finish off the look.

Having looked at the products available in more detail I have found a few options that might be suitable for our use, but there are lots of ideas out there for the design of your folder. These include:

Optional Extras within your Conference Folder

More basic versions come with pockets and space for a pan and pen, but some of the more luxurious designs come with some additional handy extras including ring binders, business card holders, calculators, clocks and disc holders.

Size of your conference folder

A4 tends to be the most popular choice for conference folder so you can fit a full size pad inside, but A5 folders are also popular and look very tidy plus their compactness makes them easy to transport for someone that might spend a lot of time on the road.

Materials for your conference folder

Depending on the end use of the folder and the people you are handing the folder to out to you might want to look at a different style of finish. Popular choices include leather, faux leather, plastic and fabric. Depending on the type of fabric you will also get a different personalisation style – embroidery and screen printing are both popular.

Of course, if you purchase a few of them they can be passed out to customers as well as employees and you will likely save some money for buying a larger quantity.

Laser Engraving for Promotional Products – the next big thing?

I talk a lot about printed pens, mugs, conference folders and the like on this blog, but I wanted to focus a little more attention on the processes used for printing onto these items and the advantages of them.

Personalised pens are still one of the most popular promotional items available on the market and are repeatedly ordered by thousands of businesses every year. But there are many options to consider just for the personalisation.

Printing on a Personalised Pen

Standard printing is normally available in Pantone colours and most promotional gift suppliers will charge per colour for your printing set up. It is always a good idea to purchase a pen that already incorporates your logo colours within its existing design as this will often save you money.

The printing itself is normally completed on the barrel of the pen, but (in some cases) can also be done on the clip of the lid.

Although the printing technology available today is specialised, you should always think about how clear and easy to read your end design will be and be sure to include useful information on the print such as contact details.

Contrasting colours are a good idea for this as they will stick out from the barrel of the pen.

Laser Engraving on a Promotional Pen

Printed Laser Engraved Pen

Printed Laser Engraved Pen

Laser Engraving is a popular way to personalise a pen and is often a choice with the more executive styles such as metal ball point pens and gift pen sets with fountain pens included.

Laser engraving of course is all self colour, but in some cases a contouring effect can be added to create a 3D look and the end results are often far more polished than the printed alternatives.

Laser technology has moved a long way in recent years and is commonly used in the personalisation of bulk and individual products such as trophies, glass photo holders and other keepsakes.

If you are looking to personalise a product using laser engraving then speak to a promotional product supplier who will be able to advise you on the various products available. Besides Pens I have also seen USB Keys, Letter Openers and Keyrings that have been personalised in this way.

Design and Brand Importance

I was speaking recently with a company involved in Web Design Basingstoke regarding the importance of Brand both on your website and throughout your personalised stationary and other products.

It doesn’t matter what type of business you own, small or large, local or international, good branding and effective promotion of the brand raises customer and client awareness of your company as well as being an excellent promotional tool within itself. The brand and its message should flow fluidly throughout everything your customers see and this includes items such as:

  • Website Design
  • Letterheads and Business Cards
  • Promotional Items
  • Company Vehicles
  • Company Uniform

Website Design

Your website is often one of the first places a potential client will go to investigate your products and services. It has become the face of your company and the importance of having up to date content, clear branding and appropriate images has never been more important. There are a few basics to consider like user friendly navigation, clear images, good quality content and ensuring your contact details (and logo) are clearly visible at all times!

Letterheads and Business Cards

Many people opt to have their website designed first so business cards, letterheads and compliments slips can be built with a brand image and message that will match. Besides these items you can also have envelopes, pads and stickers for use on correspondance.

Promotional Items

Pens, Umbrellas, Conference Folders and Mugs (as well as many other products) can be personalised with a company logo, contact details and other information – these items are specifically useful at exhibition or events where they are often used as customer giveaways.

Company Vehicles

Brand Design Vehicles

Brand Design Vehicles

If you have a fleet of vehicles, then having them signwritten with logos, contact details and some basic company information is a good way of promoting your services through your road based employees! Of course, signwritten vehicles are often requested when you are visiting client sites in a business capacity as well as giving your company a professional image.

Company Uniform

Many employees are provided with a uniform or dress code to follow whilst they are working, especially those that are customer facing, but uniforms can be branded in a variety of ways. Hats, Scarves, Polo Shirts, Ties, Fleeces and Sweaters can be screen printed or embroidered to include your brand message and logo – reinforcing your company message home to potential customers.

The conversation started when I asked how soon they thought a company should consider having a website, which naturally lead to a conversation about the other items that wouldl require the same branding. In my opinion, having a website built first allows you the opportunity to get off the ground and with the right online promotion, is likely to be seen by many more people.

Promotional Products? Save on Design

If you are anything like me, you probably have to consider purchasiing some sort of personalised product for your business on a regular basis, items such as:

  • Stationary (Letterheads etc)
  • Promotional pens
  • Exhibition Equipment
  • Advertising campaigns

etc etc.

It had never occured to me until recently that I could be saving both time and money by arranging for a draft of our designs to be created in house before passing them to the manufacturer for printing.

Admittedly our designs ideas in the past have been vague and as a result the manufacturer has often put something together for us that we have changed and then moved forward with, but with a draft design of our own some of this time could have been saved.

For example, when ordering some banner stands recently I was asked if we could provide artwork for it and I forwarded a draft completed by our own team using image and photo editing software. Yes, we still had to pay for some aspects of design, but it was far less than previous years.

Promotional Banner Stand

Promotional Banner Stand

And this process is not limited to Banner Stands, all of the items listed above can have artwork that you draft yourself in the first instance. Other popular items purchased by businesses in this way include promotional pens, promotional mugs, promotional umbrellas, laptop bags and conference bags.

If you are looking for ways to lower your design spend for promotional products like these then speak to your supplier who will be able to advise you on what requirements they have to submit your own artwork.
