As I walked along my high street yesterday I was distracted by a set of posters that had been created for a new shop opening in town. The designers had cleverly gone for bright colours and large images on specially sized posters created to fit the window exactly.
I couldn’t help but think what a clever idea this is, especially as the store is focussed on female consumers and therefore the design was mainly pinks and bright colours.
Creating a design like this for large promotional products is not as diffiult as many people think and software available online can be used to create trendy, inventive and suitable promotional images for this purpose.
One of the principal things to consider when using photos in your design is the resolution and quality of the photo overall. An image that is low resolution and highly pixellated is unlikely to transfer to these products easily.
I also believe that choosing pictures with stand out colours and text that is clear and concise is important. The messages portrayed in the text should be ‘to the point’ whilst still providing the information needed.
However most important is the ‘call to action’. What does your information tell the reader to do. Why should they call again / telephone you / visit the store? Some businesses use leaflets to promote special offers or give details of upcoming promotional dates, both of which fall into the ‘call to action’ category. However adding something as simple as a telephone number can also do the job, but make sure any contact details you give are correct.
Some marketing experts say that a picture can say a thousand words, with some buyers looking at the image in front of them and making a decision before they have even read the content of the text. To me, this proves that taking time to select and edit the right pictures for your promotional materials is crucial.
